MAT

Medications for addiction treatment (MAT), sometimes referred to as medication-assisted treatment, is an evidence-based approach to treating substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder (OUD), that is based on the use of medications, sometimes combined with counseling and behavioral therapies. MAT aims to address the whole-person approach to recovery by treating the physical, psychological, and social aspects of addiction.

Context

MAT is considered the gold standard in OUD treatment, and various medications, such as methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone, can be used with counseling, therapy, and/or other support services to help individuals achieve and maintain recovery.
